The impact of food manufacturing practices on food borne diseases BABT
Sousa,Cristina Paiva de.
Food-borne illness is a major international problem and an important cause of reduced economic growth. The contamination of the food supply with the pathogens and its persistence, growth, multiplication and/or toxin production has emerged as an important public health concern. Most of these problems could be controlled with the efforts on the part of the food handlers, whether in a processing plant, a restaurant, and others. In contrast with most chemical hazardous compounds, the concentration of food pathogens changes during the processing, storage, and meal preparation, making it difficult to estimate the number of the microorganisms or the concentration of their toxins at the time of ingestion by the consumer. This review shows main microorganisms...

The relation between Escherichia coli surface functional groups' composition and their physicochemical properties BJM
Hamadi,Fatima; Latrache,Hassan; Zahir,Hafida; Elghmari,Abderrahmene; Timinouni,Mohamed; Ellouali,Mostapha.
Escherichia coli surface characteristics including hydrophobicity, electrophoretic mobility and surface functional groups' composition were investigated. These characteristics were determined respectively by water contact angle measurements, microelectrophoresis and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The relation between the physicochemical properties and functional groups' composition was also examined. The electrophoretic mobility at pH 7 appeared to be governed on the cell surface by the (O=C) functional groups. The cell surface's hydrophilicity was associated with high levels of (C-(O.N)) and (OH-(C-O-C)) functional groups, whereas the cell surface's hydrophobicity was associated with (C-(C,H)) functional groups.

Thiol-independent activity of a cholesterol-binding enterohemolysin produced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli BJMBR
Figueirêdo,P.M.S.; Catani,C.F.; Yano,T..
Enterohemolysin produced by Escherichia coli associated with infant diarrhea showed characteristics similar to those of thiol-activated hemolysins produced by Gram-positive bacteria, including inactivation by cholesterol, lytic activity towards eukaryotic cells and thermoinstability. However, enterohemolysin activity was not inactivated by oxidation or by SH group-blocking agents (1 mM HgCl2, 1 mM iodoacetic acid) and the hemolysin (100 µg/ml) was not lethal to mice, in contrast to the lethality of the thiol-activated hemolysin family to animals. Earlier reports showed that intravenous injection of partially purified streptolysin O preparations (0.2 µg) was rapidly lethal to mice. These results suggest that E. coli enterohemolysin is not a thiol-activated...

Cailleres, J.
The germicide properties of ultra-violet radiation in a wave length ranging from 100 to 400 mm were already discovered back in the late 19th century. These properties specific to UV-C radiation (200-280 mm) result from its action on the nucleic acids of the micro-organisms. Each micro-organism, depending on its composition, therefore presents a specific sensitivity to this radiation.

Treatment of hemorrhagic shock with hypertonic saline solution modulates the inflammatory response to live bacteria in lungs BJMBR
Fernandes,C.I.; Llimona,F.; Godoy,L.C.; Negri,E.M.; Pontieri,V.; Moretti,A.I.; Fernandes,T.R.; Soriano,F.G.; Velasco,I.T.; Souza,H.P..
Shock and resuscitation render patients more susceptible to acute lung injury due to an exacerbated immune response to subsequent inflammatory stimuli. To study the role of innate immunity in this situation, we investigated acute lung injury in an experimental model of ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) followed by an early challenge with live bacteria. Conscious rats (N = 8 in each group) were submitted to controlled hemorrhage and resuscitated with isotonic saline (SS, 0.9% NaCl) or hypertonic saline (HS, 7.5% NaCl) solution, followed by intratracheal or intraperitoneal inoculation of Escherichia coli. After infection, toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and 4 mRNA expression was monitored by RT-PCR in infected tissues. Plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor α and...

Validity of Escherichia coli, enterovirus, and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as indicators of viral shellfish contamination ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pelletier, Dominique; Haugarreau, Larissa; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique.
The sanitary classification of harvesting areas for bivalve mollusks in France is based on the level of Escherichia Coli contamination detected in shellfish meat, as defined in EC Directive 91/492 EEC. However, outbreaks of gastroenteritis or hepatitis after consumption of shellfish meeting current bacteriological standards suggest that E. coli is a poor indicator of viral contamination. The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of enterovirus and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as new indicators of human enteric viruses. Shellfish were sampled over a 37-mo period to characterize microbial contamination in two coastal areas subjected to different sewage contamination inputs. Contamination by E. coli, F-specific RNA bacteriophages (F+ RNA) and...

Cheve, Julien; Le Noc, Sandrine.

Virulence factors of Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheic calves Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rigobelo,E.C.; Gamez,H.J.; Marin,J.M.; Macedo,C.; Ambrosin,J.A.; Ávila,F.A..
One hundred seventy-three Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves from northwestern São Paulo State, having diarrhea were examined for the production of thermolabile (LT) and thermostable (ST) enterotoxins and for the presence of virulence factors associated with bovine colibacillosis. Eighty-five (49.1%) of the E.coli strains produced toxins; 53 isolates were detected as producing STa toxin, and 9 also produced LT toxin. By PCR, 23 isolates were shown to harbor only the LT-II gene. Nine (5.2%) isolates harbored Shiga toxin genes: four carried the stx2 gene, four the stx1 gene and one carried both. Three of the isolates showing stx1 also carried the eae gene. Among the E. coli isolates examined for susceptibility to 10 antimicrobial agents,...

Virulence, resistance, and genetic relatedness of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. isolated from mule foals Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carneiro,V.C.; Lessa,D.A.B.; Guttmann,P.M.; Magalhaes,H.; Aquino,M.H.C.; Cunha,L.E.R.; Arais,L.R.; Cerqueira,A.M.F..
ABSTRACT Respiratory diseases are common in young horses but little is known about such infections in mule foals. This study aimed to characterize Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. isolated from tracheal wash (TW) and fecal samples (FS) of mule foals, with or without cytological evidence of respiratory disease. Strains were analyzed against 13 antimicrobials, for presence of Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and virulence genes. Phylogrouping and Randomic (RAPD)-PCR profiles were used to evaluate their genetic relatedness. E. coli strains from TW and FS showed greatest resistance to tetracycline, while Klebsiella strains were mainly resistant to ampicillin; multidrug resistance and ESBL production were also detected. The blaCTX gene prevailed...
